Malus LADY.

An apple thought to have been discovered in the ForestApple Trees Lady of Apis in France 1628, and grown in the gardens of Louis XIV. The aristocratic ladies chose this apple for eating as it would fit into their small delicate hands. A small flatish apple having a creamy yellow, shiny  skin, with a deep crimson on it’s sunny side. The white tender flesh is effervescent, crisp and juicy. Being an all purpose apple, it is also good in cider, you do need a good long season for ripening.

MalusApple Trees Laxton's Superb LAXTON’S SUPERB

This is a variety raised by the Laxton brothers in 1897 of Bedford U.K.  originally from a cross between Cox’s Orange Pippin and Wyken Pippin. Whilst it has some of the complexities of  the Cox’s it has carried the richness to add with the sweetness, and aroma into a firm but juicy  flesh, with medium to  large fruit and skin of yellow and a red flush. whilst a self fertile tree it  will be  better with another pollinator.

Malus LORD LAMBOURNE.Apple Trees Lord Lambourne

In 1907, Laxton brothers crossed a Worcester Pearmain with a James Grieve, which was released in 1923 as Lord Lambourne, the apple retained the acidity of James Grieve together with the light srawberry taste of the Worcester, giving a pale creamy fesh that is fine grained, aromatic, crisp and juicy-sweet. The skin colour, appears to be green with a hint of  yellow that carries a red flush and darker red striping.


Apple Trees Lyman's Large Summer  This apple was described in William Kendrick’s “New American  Orchardist” in  1844 and was then thought to be lost, although it reappeared in 1941.Sometimes yellow, this  a large green apple, with a juicidly crisp flesh that tends to blend sweet and sub acid, making it one of the finest winter apples.

Malus MAIDEN BLUSH.Apple Trees Maiden Blush

An apple made popular by Samuel Allinson of Burlington, New Jersey, and popular in the Philadephia market from around 1817. Having skin of lemon yellow with flesh being a white, and slightly yellow,which is both crisp and tender, tasting sharply acid at first, but mellows as it ripens.


Apple Trees Margil    One of those apples without a true origin, being either English or French from  around the 1750s. Whilst it is a smallish apple, many suggest that it is one of the finest dessert  apples, because of the sugary flesh gives off a powerful aroma. The skin is orange to red in  colour with a dark red striping which is usually russeted. Tends to be a slender/weak tree due to it’s low vigour.

Malus MELBA.Apple Trees Melba

First grown at the Central experimenting farm in Ottawa, Canada,1898 by W.T. Macoun, and introduced in 1924. Whilst the skin has a good background colour of yellow, which is awash with a pinkish crimson, and tends to bruise easily. The flesh is tender and juicy but sweetly sub acid. A winter hardy apple due to it’s parentage of Liveland (lowland) Raspberry, which was crossed with McIntosh.


Apple Trees MilwaukeeA seedling of Duchess, this apple was first raised by George Jeffery of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, whilst used mainly for cooking and raised in the colder regions. The apple is also good for eating from the tree, which produces a large apple with skin yellow with a green blush that tends to be sreaked with bright red and crimson.

Malus MOTHER.Apple Trees Mother

An apple that ripens around September, from Bolton, Worcester County,  Massachusetts. An elongated and conical shaped fruit , medium in size, with a yellowish skin  that has bright red mottling, a yellow flesh that is sweet acid/spicy flavour but juicy.

In examining the various names it appears that some, are named after the  grower/ horticulturalist or their loved ones, the odd few are named due to their colour. I am waiting for those that are named after holidays or various points in history. This will allow me to eat the appropriate apple on holidays.
