FLOWERS

In starting to write about flowers, my mind wandered to when I was was on a coach trip that took me past growers fields that had one variety of flower, and then continued past similar fields with just one variety, so you saw a wonderful sight of a single colour. Although the average garden contains many varieties, it is always wonderful to see a collection of flowers be they a bunch of roses or a bouquet as a gift to a friend or relative, or even as a thankyou to some one who has honoured you with a favour.

Obviously not being aware of all the flowers that are available, I decided to look in a reference book to find, names I could not remember, flowers I did not know existed, or just flowers which had been developed from various types.

You may not believe it but I was horrified, in the index each page listed 50 different species in the list of “A”.  My dilemma was, where do I start ( I even know your replies!!). So I thought I would start listing them alphabetically, but I make no appology for the list which may include the common or the obscure, whichever your choice I am sure you can more than fill your garden with colour. But please do remember plants do not all grow in the same type of soils, some like a peat type of soil, some like a sunny spot or well drained soil, whilst others require shade or a damp to moist soil.

With some of the problems, there is always the expert knowledge available at the suppliers, garden centres or horticulturalists, in whom I have always placed my faith, if ever I am in doubt.

I have included the more common names where they are known and only the “technical” names if no common names are available, if you do not see the letter beginning with the flower you are seeking I crave your indulgence, on the other hand the flower you are looking for may be classified under other pages still to be written, such as shrubs, or vines but be patient, your flower will be included.

I also thought you might like to see the meanings of flowers are, which could save you sending to wrong type for an anniversary or a “I love you meaning”, so if you click on the page  marked Meanings of Flowers, you are sure to find what you are looking for.          FRED.
