FRUIT TREES.

APRICOTS.

I have included trees in this selection of apricots to give you reasons for making “custard” or for using cream, also apricots are another crop that can be grown organically, and having blossoms that will contribute to the overall colour of your garden.

You will find that most of the apricot trees are grown on a rootstock best suited to give a standard or vigorous grower or even to produce bigger fruit.

But to get you started I thought I would introduce :-

APRIUM.

Aprium HONEY RICH            I can already hear you asking ” A what”. This is a cross between 2 fruits, 75% apricot and 25% plum. An Aprium not only has an bright orange/yellow skin without “fuzz” but an orange juicy flesh tAprium FLAVOR ANNEasting of apricot, with a hint of plum. As for eating, it is an  ideal fruit that can be used  in salads, desserts in sauces, or added to breads, but an aprium can also be added as a sweetener for other foods.

ROYAL BLENHEIM Apricot.

This apricot has been classed as outstanding as an eatinApricot ROYAL BLENHEIMg variety, of medium size, it is also used for canning, with the pit (stone) being left in by those who preserve the fruit at home. the other advantages of the Blenheim apricot, include a low chilling factor, (some apricots need up to 800 hours  of winter chilling on the tree), also this apricot tree is a good variety for pollenating other apricots. Usually ripens around late May.

Apricot GOLD KIST    GOLD KIST Apricot.

Another low chilling variety of apricots, best suited for warmer climates, Gold Kist apricot is a heavy bearing variety, self pollenating and can ripen 4-5 weeks before Blenheim.

HARCOT ApricotApricot HARCOT

This apricot variety was released from Vineyard horticulture institute in Ontario, with firm flesh, but the skin of the  apricot Harcot is a deep golden colour with a blush of red. Being a heavy cropper, better results are achieved if the apricots are thinned out. The Harcot apricot tree will need another variety for pollenating.

Apricot HARGLOW     HARGLOW Apricot.

Harglow apricot trees are  good croppers, require no other variety for pollenating, producing large full of flavour juicy apricots, the trees have a resistance to the usual diseases of other apricot trees.

Apricot KATY   KATY Apricot

The apricot Katy has a gorgeous golden yellow skin , with, at times a slight red flush on the cheek, also  apricot Katy has a sweet yet sub acid flavour, giving it a more eatable (less dribble) quality in an apricot.

MOORPARK Apricot.

Moorpark apricots have a deep orange flesh, large juicy fruit with a rich yet sweet flavour. It is suggested that that the Moorpark apricot tree is grown as an espalier or fan trained tree, as to train the tree you are giving more support to the largeApricot MOORPARK apricots it bears, and by growing the tree against a south or south west wall it will receive the shelter it  requires. If choosing a  young apricot tree you have the option of training the tree into any shape, within reason, when training the apricot tree against a wall allow plenty of space as it can spread to 3 1/2 metres wide and 2 metres tall. Thats about 12 feet by 6 feet, these trees can also be grown as a normal shaped free standing apricot tree and likes a sunny sheltered position, that is not prone to late frosts.

TOMCOT Apricot.

A variety, new from Canada that has made a radicle chanApricot TOMCOTge in the apricot industry, for it is a self fertile tree specially suited to grow as a fan or trained tree on a WEST wall as well as southwest or south wall and produces excellent juicy fruit on a compact tree. Similar to most fruit trees it requires 3 1/2 metres by 2 metres high, (12 feet by 6 feet high) or as a free standing tree providing it is a sunny position not subject to late frosts.

So if you decide to grow a gorgeous apricot tree and find that you have too much fruit after eating, baking, preserving, adding to a fruit cocktail or salad, remember you can also use it to  make a fruit squash or even a cider !! Now there is a thought? how many ways to have your healthy diet, I am sure if there are other ways, you will let me know! These are some of the ways to eat healthy and  enjoy it.
